Here Traffic Traffic Traffic….

TV drives people to the web. Not exactly breaking news. But too often, TV advertisers fail to take advantage of the waves their ads create.

It’s something I’ve seen for a long time and now has a direct connection to this site. Almost two years ago JK Harris bought backtaxes.com. I wrote about it back in January ’08. Soon thereafter, I was ranking #1 when people went to Google to search for the domain. Even though you or I might go to the URL bar to put in the domain, there are so many people out there that will go to google or yahoo and actually SEARCH for the domain. So without intending to, I was getting a ton of traffic to that post driven by people who had just seen the ad. I happened to have Adsense on there, so I made a little bit of money from it. Accidental profit is fun.

Well, lightning has struck twice. Let’s go even FURTHER back to June 2007. I subscribed to Sirius radio at the time and one of the songs I was hearing a lot was ‘Electric Worry’ by Clutch. It’s very catchy and I couldn’t get it out of my head and I couldn’t buy it from iTunes at the time so I ended up watching the youtube video over and over again. I wrote about it here and soon after I began to see that I wasn’t alone in like the song. I would get a few visitors every day from people searching for the lyrics ‘Bang Bang Bang Vamanos Vamanos’. I thought that was kind of cool.

Fast forward to the beginning of November ’09. There’s a new video game being pushed for the holidays called Left 4 Dead 2. I think it has something to do with shooting zombies. In the commercial for the game, ‘Electric Worry’ is the background music. Bang Bang Bang Vamanos Vamanos. On average, 900 people a day are coming to that page from Google since that commercial started airing.

Lesson learned: TV pushes people to the web. Be there to greet them.

My Indiana Jones 4 Review

Just got home from watching Indiana Jones 4. Like Godfather 3 and Rocky 5, it never should have been made.

Random thoughts that came to me throughout the two hours that I will never be able to get back…

1. All this movie is missing is Ewoks. (But just then, a bunch of monkeys showed up that basically filled the role.)

2. How long until the Disney ride is announced? (**edit – Too late)

3. Shai Labeuouueueooueaeio(sometimes y)f. My new rule: If he’s in it, don’t see it.

4. Skulls with frickin lasers

5. This is like a video game played on super-novice level. Or with the immortality cheat code used.

6. I don’t really remember the Temple of Doom movie except that it had really grating and annoying sidekicks. Oh wait…

Weezer's Pork and Beans – Web Celebs' 16th Minute

It’s time for me to post another music video link. Weezer has recently released their new video for their song, “Pork and Beans”.

In it, they have captured a ton of the viral web celebrities. Plus it’s an awesome Weezer song, so I’ve already watched it 4 times.

I didn’t recognize them all, but here’s what I could identify.

Pachelbel’s Canon Guitar Guy
Numa Numa Guy
Dramatic Squirrel
Kung fu Falling Guy
Diet Coke and Mentos
GI Joe PSA – can’t find the exact link
Lots of T-Shirts
Leave Britney Alone (profanity)
All Your Base Are Belong To Us
Miss Teen USA South Carolina
Star Wars Kid – subtle reference
Evolution of Dance
Chocolate Rain
Kevin Federline’s Popozao preview
Peanut Butter Jelly Time
Daft Punk’s Harder Bodies Faster Stronger
Daft Hands – Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger
Shoes

I know I missed a couple. Let me know if you can identify them.

And that, my friends, is a great way to head into a long weekend.

What's your Fighter Entrance Song?

Last night I watched the UFC pay per view fights. No major upsets. GSP beat Matt Serra, Michael Bisping beat Captain Miserable McCarthy, Kalib Starnes killed his career as a UFC fighter.

I always notice the intro music. You know, the music over the louspeakers that blast as the fighters make their way to the ring. It used to seem that every fighter would come out with some aggo-scream metal song like Korn, Godsmack, Disturbed or Drowning Pool. The other night, there was much more a mix of more recognizable music with classic rock, rap and country. Eminem is used a lot. The funniest I’ve heard was Duran Duran’s ‘Wild Boys’ for Mirko Cro-cop.

I wonder if the metal is out of the fighters’ itunes playlists or if it’s an overt effort by the promoters to have more encompassing songs. Do the fighters have complete control over what they could play assuming it’s a pay per view fight and naughty words isn’t a problem? If I wanted to use the theme song from Happy Days, could I? What about inserting subliminal messages? “You will wet yourself in fear when Andy Sweet enters the ring…. You will wet yourself in fear when Andy Sweet enters the ring…”

That got me further thinking… what would I choose for an entrance song? The following are some possibilities:
The Serpentine Offering by Dimmu Borgir - evil symphonic metal
Come to Daddy by the Dillinger Escape Plan and Mike Patton – insane redo of Aphex Twin which was insane to begin with
The Foggy Dew by the Chieftains and Sinead O’Connor – The Dropkick Murphys use this before they take the stage. Or at least they did the last time I saw them. It gives me goosebumps.

What would your fight entrance song be and why?

Happy Halloween

I hope everybody had a great Halloween!
