I Can’t Help Myself

Yesterday, I was talking to a friend over lunch as he was telling me about his desire to grow his business, or offer different services, or….. just something different.

It reminded me that getting what you want isn’t the hardest thing, it’s KNOWING what you want. How many people can clearly and succinctly define a goal they have? Even when people say they know their goal, frequently that’s just the physical manifestation of some deeper goal that they don’t clearly recognize. Further, some ‘goals’ aren’t goals at all because they haven’t thought about if they’re willing to do what it takes to attain the goal.goal

If you ask a person what their goal is, many will simply say, “more money.” Really? How do you plan to do it? You might not like the requirements to make more money. The longer hours, the less-than-pleasant decisions, the sacrifices you may have to make. Money is just the byproduct or side effect of the bigger goal. If you don’t love what you’re doing along the way, you won’t be great at it and you want get there.

What I love to do is help small business owners be successful. Even without consciously realizing it, it’s what I’ve always been drawn to, what I’ve always done. From the beginning of my career working as a junior booking agent in the music business to working for startups to now living in Grand Rapids, MI and helping small businesses grow their sales and client base through internet marketing. I respect people that have taken that scary step of moving out on their own and working to create something. I couldn’t do anything else if I tried. I love the fight, the struggle, the roller coaster, the thrill of victory and even the possibility of the agony of defeat.

It may sound silly, but I didn’t consciously know that about myself for a long time. My goal, my personal satisfaction, is accomplished by helping others identify and reach their goals.

And by the way, if you’re looking for a great Grand Rapids gym, check out Iron Orr. It’s a no-nonsense, no-fad weight room. Ask for Stu, owner and personal trainer. My wife and I have been working with him for 7 months now and I’m in the best shape of my life. Maybe I’ll post some before and current pics soon 😉
